How 3D planning brought peace of mind to the Après-ski

The Yontec Après-ski on the Market Square has grown into a fixed highlight of the winter calendar in Sint-Truiden. Organising such a busy event on a historic square requires more than just a strong programme. Behind the scenes, careful preparation is essential to perfectly align atmosphere, safety and logistics.

Sherbō played a key role in this process. Using their 3D approach, the square was digitally scanned in advance and translated into a highly accurate model. No outdated plans or guesswork, but one shared and up-to-date reality for all parties involved.

During the Yontec Après-ski, this 3D model was used to test the entire set-up in advance: from stage and bar layouts to crowd flows, emergency exits and access zones. This made it possible to clearly map mobility and safety already in the preparation phase long before the first drink was poured.

Organiser Peter Onkelinx emphasises the impact this made:

“There are no 100% accurate plans of the Market Square. Thanks to the 3D scan, we could fully fine-tune our set-up in advance, taking into account planters, parking meters, information screens and the Christmas tree. In the past, it was mostly guesswork; now everything was laid out with GPS points. We had strict agreements with the market vendors about the set-up, and with the safety services we agreed on a clearly marked 40-metre emergency exit. The collaboration with Sherbō and local professional Willem Herbots brought real peace of mind to the organisation.”

Willem Herbots also sees this sense of calm as a key benefit:

“A well-prepared production removes frustration and gives everyone the space to create impact. When everyone looks at the same plan, calm emerges. And from that calm, creativity can grow.”

This approach proved its value not only during the Après-ski, but also at other complex public events on the Market Square, such as the world record polonaise. By visually working out every scenario in advance, every crew member, supplier and safety service knew exactly what their role was.

For Sint-Truiden, this story shows how smart technology and local collaboration go hand in hand. With one central, visual plan, the Après-ski became not only a vibrant celebration, but also a safe and smoothly organised event.
